PathWays PA Video

Recently, ON VIDEO had a shoot at PathWays PA, an organization that serves more than 6,000 women, children, and famlies in the Greater Philadelphia area. Take a look at the finished promotional video for this group that is really making a difference in people's lives.

Santa's Arrival and Festival of Lights

ON VIDEO is in the Christmas spirit! ON VIDEO captured Santa's Arrival and the Festival of Lights on Black Friday outside the Courthouse and all along State Street. We had cameras set up all throughout the town to catch the smiling faces of kids and grown ups too. Makin' Music got the crowd warmed up and the Phillie Phanatic was up to his usual funny antics. Then the grand finale - Santa rode in on a Media Fire Company fire truck and turned the town's lights on!

PathWays PA "Giving Tuesday" Shoot

Tuesday brought with it some pretty cold temperatures and a dreary day all around.  You would never know it by the heartwarming stories playing out at PathWays PA.  ON VIDEO has been working with PathWays PA since 2004.  Over the years, we’ve talked to many associated with the organization, and have gathered amazing success stories.  Today we recorded several interviews to update their promotional video.

PathWays PA was founded back in 1978 as one of the state’s first residential programs to keep low-income, vulnerable women together with their children.  It serves more than 6,000 women, children, and families living in the Greater Philadelphia area by keeping families together, supporting parents and their children, providing in-home services to prevent child abuse, and assisting families reach self-sufficiency.  Programs include job training and employment assistance, free tax preparation assistance, and the Adopt-A-Family holiday program, among many others.

This year the term Giving Tuesday has been coined, and today we saw evidence of contributions that make a difference.  Stay tuned, as next week we will bring you those inspirational stories.

Tyler Steadycam Shoot

I watched that video for Tyler Arboretum again and was reminded of something: when we did the shoot we had a Steadycam operator on our crew. The Steadycam allows those amazing "floating" shots where the camera moves smoothly through the scene. The actual equipment is worn like a high-tech vest that fits over the shoulders and the camera is mounted on a precision spring/counterweight system that allows for the smooth movement. It weighs about forty pounds and requires quite a bit of training to learn how to use it.

When we did the Tyler Arboretum shoot it was July. A hot July day. The camera operator had to wear this heavy contraption and was drenched in sweat. We would shoot for ten or fifteen minutes then take a ten minute break so he could sit and cool off and get some water. It was a long, grueling day. the results are beautiful and the finished video is still one of my favorites. But in November it's hard to imagine a day that was so hot we could barely stand it.

Media Thanksgiving Food Drive

This time of year, I find we all get so wrapped up in the hustle and bustle of the holiday season. Each year the to-do list seems to get longer, and the season seems to start earlier. The food shopping, the endless cooking, the gift-buying, the tree-trimming, the cleaning, and all the miscellaneous errands. We get stressed, we lose our patience, we lose sleep. With all of that going on, it's certainly easy to lose sight of the real reason for the holiday.

I think we should take some time to appreciate our family and friends, to enjoy the spirit of giving, to be thankful for all that we have, and to try to help out others who might be in need. Charity is definitely a part of our philosophy at The Media Message. Over the years, we have worked with many local, regional, and national non-profit organizations, including American Red Cross, Salvation Army, Community Action Agency of Delaware County, American Cancer Society, and Tug McGraw Foundation.

Recently, I helped coordinate the 2nd Annual Thanksgiving Food Drive at The Plumstead Inn. We collected frozen turkeys, canned goods, and other non-perishables over the past month, and just this past weekend, we delivered the donations to Nativity B.V.M. in Media. I was floored by the amount of donations we were able to secure. We wound up with about 700 lbs. of food, which included 21 turkeys.

It warmed my heart to see all the big smiles when we brought in the food. We were assured that the items were going to help feed a lot of people right here in our neighborhood this Thanksgiving. What a feeling it is to be a part of such an effort, knowing our small but mighty group could help out so many people in need right here in our hometown.

The Media Message wishes you and yours a happy and healthy Thanksgiving!

Tyler Arboretum Clean Up

This weekend I put on my best messy clothes and went to Tyler Arboretum to help clear their hiking trails. There are about 20 miles of wooded trails out there, and ultra-mega-super-storm Sandy brought down several trees across some trails.

About 30 volunteers split into 4 teams and spent all morning clearing huge tree trunks and tons of branches and sticks from the trails.

I first visited Tyler Arboretum a few years ago when ON VIDEO made a video titled "Discover Tyler". You can see it here:
http://v4ws.com/Tyler/index.html
ON VIDEO is the video production division of The Media Message, and in addition to the on-location shoot, we also wrote the script, did the editing and graphics to complete the video.

The weather Saturday was fantastic, and it was great to get outside and do something worthwhile to benefit Tyler. It is an amazing place. A portion of the Arboretum is surrounded by a twelve-foot fence to protect the plants from deer. But for hiking, you go through a tall gate and venture outside the exclusion fence and wander through the woods. The trails are really well marked and very wide. You feel like you are out in the wilderness.

Covering the Veterans Day Parade

Once again ON VIDEO provided video coverage of the Delaware County Veterans Day Parade in Media. ON VIDEO is the corporate video production division of The Media Message. This is the thirteenth Veterans Day Parade we've shot. The weather was outstanding, with lots of bands helping the celebration, kids, adults, veterans, dignitaries. It is consistently a well-organized event.

It's great to honor the country's veterans each year. I never served in the military; The closest I ever came was being a Patrol Leader in the Boy Scouts. And believe me, we did not face any dangerous or life-threatening situations in the basement of St. Mark's Lutheran Church. The Veterans Day parade stirs patriotic pride and inspires gratitude to remember the sacrifices and hardship of those who served, and their families who waited anxiously to welcome them home.

As always, the hardest part is thinking about those who never came home. I'm proud that Delaware County makes such a tremendous effort to remember our veterans each November, and throughout the year.
